Abstract

In this chapter, we explain four essential aspects of sound. We begin by discussing the most basic aspect, the acoustic reality. This describes the production, propagation, and reception of sounds. The second aspect is sound anatomy, a mathematical model of an individual sound. The third aspect is the communicative dimension of sound as a message. The fourth aspect is the human anatomy of sound perception.
