Six out of 23 genera of the family Xanthomonadaceae in the Gammaproteobacteria are involved directly or indirectly in oil or petroleum hydrocarbon degradation. In this chapter we discuss the taxonomy, physiology, and ecology of species of Hydrocarboniphaga, Pseudoxanthomonas, Rhodanobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Xanthomonas, and Xylella that are involved in{\thinspace}oil degradation.
