Knowledge of the viscosity of fluid magmatic systems is extremely important to the understanding of igneous processes. Such processes include the ascent of magma from depth, the dynamics of magma generation and evolution under variable temperature and pressure conditions, the relative proportions of effusive and intrusive rock masses, differentiation processes, and heat and mass transfer.
