The Nouragues tropical forest research station was established in 1986 to implement research on the natural mechanisms of forest regeneration. We chose to select a place relatively removed from rivers (navigable water courses) but yet not too far from Cayenne (for obvious financial reasons) and close to a pre-existent light research camp established by the National Museum of Natural History on the Pararé rapids of the Arataye river. Both the fauna and flora of this area had been under study since 1978, and this provided a valuable scientific data base on which to build further research.
