Fifteen ascidian species were present in Papeete harbour in 1984. Ali these species have a large geographical distribution and eleven of them are common to the harbours of Papeete and Guadeloupe (West Indies). In Tahiti, five species seem to be restricted to the harbour area only, five others having very few representatives outside. It is obvious that the movement of ships and the pre- sence of harbours play a large part in the transport of ascidians from one continent to another.
