Abstract

This chapter examines the social history of the state mental hospital, including its emergence and institutionalization in the nineteenth century; its critique by sociologists and other observers in the period just after World War II; and its deinstitutionalization in the past half-century. The chapter next discusses the consequences of deinstitutionalization.
