Abstract

The urban area is increasingly engaged with complex digital infrastructure, which is posing a diversity of capricious and extraordinary challenges for urban governance in India. The chapter discusses the new policies and programs formulated to meet the challenges of governance in general and urban e-governance in particular. These days innovation-based arrangements advance a worldview of smart urban improvement to turn out to be increasingly manageable and resilient, yet there is still a lot to do in the interest of residents themselves, to expand value being developed, equivalent access, chances to information and correspondence, and to open up the production of inventive administration. It is based on the principles of inclusiveness, accountability and effectiveness. The aim of this article is to explore the urban local bodies’ role in promotion of “e-governance” as “smart governance” in West Bengal. It argues that one of the significant aspects of sustainable urbanization is e-governance. Moreover, the chapter emphasizes that effectiveness of the “smart governance” in this globalized world not only contingent on public participation but also degree information diffusion by the urban local bodies through Internet.
