Abstract

Rate constants measured with the flowing afterglow technique at 298 ± 2 K are reported for the proton-transfer reactions of H 3 O + with CH 2 O, CH 3 CHO, (CH 3 ) 2 CO, HCOOH, CH 3 COOH, HCOOCH 3 , CH 3 OH, C 2 H 5 OH, (CH 3 ) 2 O, and CH 2 CO. Dissociative proton-transfer was observed only with CH 3 COOH. The rate constants are compared with the predictions of various theories for ion–molecule collisions. The protonation is discussed in terms of the energetics and mechanisms of various modes of dissociation.
