Abstract

China has a long tradition of astronomy. Astronomy constituted one of the most fundamental elements of Chinese culture. The Chinese modeled society on the heavens. One of the first priorities of the ruler was to have the calendar made and issued. This tradition had its roots in remote antiquity. Some early documents, such as the Canon of Yao, mention astronomical practices in remote ancient times.
