Abstract

For a long time people got away without software process and produced a lot of software, some of it pretty good too. People who are expected to use the process are going to resist it. It is often implemented less than optimally in many establishments. There are certainly many improvements that could be made to both their approaches to software process and the process their approach produces. But it is questionable if all the hesitancy, reservations, resistance and outright rebellion is simply the work of recidivists or it is just stepping on the cowboy programmers' inalienable right to program whatever and however the heck they please. It is questionable as to what it is that they object to. The cry is that the other person's process is stifling the creativity of the other. The cornerstone of the software process faith is that process engenders repeatability. There are basically four types of project teams and each of them has specific needs and goals. Since what each team is trying to accomplish is different, one would presume the nature of its process must be different if it is to be successful.
