Abstract

The most likely cause of a future pandemic is the spillover of a “novel” virus, against which people have not developed immunity, from animals to humans. Several factors have made this more likely in recent years: increased use of wildlife for food and increased trade in wildlife, deforestation, the rise of factory farming of food animals, and global warming.
