Abstract

Within society, familism is often related to the limitations presented by the welfare state, forcing them to play an excessive role. Social changes in Spanish society have been significant and rapid, in some cases to the point of disseminating the idea of family crisis. Nonetheless, the family is in good health and continues to be the most valued institution in Spain. Meanwhile, there are many areas of change currently affecting family solidarity and presenting new challenges to the family. © 2009 Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia - UFRGS.
