Abstract

Biomass resources for the production of renewable energy, chemicals and polymeric materials are abundant. In this chapter, these resources will be categorized into woody biomass, agricultural residues and waste, municipal solid waste, sewage sludge and aquatic plants. The origins, use and typical composition (physical, chemical and biological) of the different biomass types will be presented.
