Abstract

Priority queueing is an important and popular traffic scheduling mechanism for the provisioning of network Quality-of-Service (QoS) which has received numerous research efforts. Realistic traffic in multi-service networks exhibits heterogeneous Long-Range Dependent (LRD) and Short-Range Dependent (SRD) properties. This chapter presents an efficient and comprehensive performance model for investigating the QoS of priority queueing systems in the presence of heterogeneous LRD and SRD traffic. We derive and validate the closed-form expressions of the queue length and loss probability distributions for individual traffic flows. The analytical model is used to evaluate the impact of LRD traffic on system performance under different working conditions and investigate the buffer management and allocation in priority queueing systems with QoS constraints.
