Abstract

Since the hypothetical diaqua Au(I) and tetraaqua Au(III) ions do not exist even in strong HClO4 soln. and their std. electrode potentials are not accessible to direct measurement, the knowledge of the std. potential for a series of Au(I) and Au(III) complexes was utilized to det. the electrode potentials of the aqua Au ions. The data for the various Au complexes was gained from the literature and used in calcn. of the said potentials for the 2 aqua Au complexes: E∞[Au(H2O)2+,Au] = 1.83 V and E∞[Au(H2O)43+,Au] = 1.52 V. The Edwards' plots for Au(I) and Au(III) are given as well as the ligand parameters to Edwards' eqution in ref. to Cl-. The stability consts. listed are deemed better than some already published.
