This paper reviews ISO OSI network security principals and aspects of realising network security in distributed systems. In doing so the concept of a Trusted Network Base(TNB) is re-visited. A brief review of the Red Book conceptual NTCB is then given. Finally a comparison between the TNB and the NTCB is undertaken in order to clarify system implementation with regard to alignment with both the OSI model and the Red Book approach.
