A recent global survey finds that the average cost of a data breach is 3.86 million dollars and the average cost per lost or stolen record is 148 dollars (Ponemon Institute, 2018 cost of a data breach study: Global overview, 2018). In this chapter, data breaches and carding are discussed. First, details on various types of data breaches and their impacts are presented. Trend analysis of data breaches indicates that compared to previous trends, the types of attacks and the industries impacted by breaches are changing. Second, the global nature of carding, the actors involved, and the organization of carding ecosystem are addressed. The chapter provides guidance on data breaches and carding based on current research literature.
