One of the fundamental theorems of modern protein chemistry, the Anfinsen Hypothesis, is that the vast majority of protein architecture in biological systems arises from the primary sequences of the proteins (Anfinsen, 1973). While the most recent discoveries of the action of chaperonins has indicated a role for these proteins in the kinetics of protein folding, the fundamental theorem still applies. A major corollary to this theorem also appears to be time-tested: function arises from structure.
