Abstract

In this chapter, we analyse three fundamental practices of Japanese mathematics teachers to better understand the set of community values that influence their work as teachers. The three fundamental practices are: writing detailed lesson plans, kyozaikenkyu (a planning practice), and emphasizing student mathematical reasoning in instruction. An analysis of these community practices resulted in eight potential values of the Japanese mathematics teacher community. These values help the field better understand why Japanese teachers engage in the work of teaching the way that they do.
