Despite recent advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment, survival of patients with advanced malignancy remains suboptimal. Fortunately, our understanding of the origins of cancer has changed dramatically during the past 25 years, owing in large part to the revolution in molecular biology that has changed all biomedical research. Powerful experimental tools are available to cancer biologists and have made it possible to uncover and dissect the complex molecular machinery operating inside normal and malignant cells. In addition, these tools have allowed researchers to pinpoint the defects that cause cancer cells to signal and proliferate abnormally. © 2008 Springer New York.
