Abstract

The list presents all valid species recorded in Europe in alphabetical order, with notes on synonyms, taxonomy, ecology, and distribution maps. Species distribution is shown by countries, and only certain species with very limited distribution are shown on smaller, often endemic areas. The distribution maps were prepared based on all the monographs and primary literature listed (after a colon) at the end (with a few exceptions) of each synonym list or cited in the ecology notes. As complementary information, the catalog of Limnofauna Europea (Illies 1967, 1978), the Fauna Europea (de Jong 2013), and unpublished world-wide database (maintained by L. A. Błędzki 1975–2015) were also used.
