The term ‘integrated optics’ has been created more than 30 years ago and describes a family of technologies where light guiding structures are integrated on planar substrates. The concept corresponds to electronic integration, where lithographical tools are used to create structures in the micron range with submicron precision. One of the first reliable production processes for integrated optical waveguides was ion exchange in glass.
