Abstract

Project appraisal in the UK aviation industry can be divided into four areas: airports, navigational and air traffic control facilities, and safety. Long lead times and the considerable impact of airports on the environment make appraisal a complicated task. Air traffic control projects are assessed by the Civil Aviation Authority and, if the cost exceeds £5m, by the Department of Transport (DTp). Safety projects bring their own problems due largely to the intangible nature of air safety and its high public profile. The industry is increasingly required to be seen to be cost effective and this implies a change in the philosophy applied to project appraisal. © 1992 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
