Abstract

Teachers are expected to accommodate an increasingly heterogeneous learner. It is crucial that the competence of any teachers should be evident on its effects to the learning and improved performance. As used in the study, competencies are the skills and knowledge that enable a teacher to be successful in the domains of instruction, assessment, classroom management, and personal qualities. In this study, it used the descriptive-correlational research design which determined the significant correlation between the level of competency in areas of the subject matter, content to be taught, instructional strategies, assessment, professional practice, classroom management, and the use of facilities and equipment among MAPEH teachers and the academic performance of the students. The participants of the study were the 126 secondary MAPEH teachers in the Divisions of Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands and Camarines Sur. Results of the data gathered were analyzed and interpreted using the Weighted Mean, Descriptive statistics,Correlation analysis and Multiple linear regression. Results showed that teachers were very competent in areas like subject matter, content to be taught, professional practice, and classroom management, while moderately competent on areas like instructional strategies, assessment and the use of facilities and equipment. There was a significant correlation between academic performance and the competence of the teachers in aspects like mastery, content, professional practice, and classroom management which are important in raising the quality of teachers’ competence of the MAPEH teachers.
