The benefits are argued of applying consistent conceptual frameworks in the expanding world of electronic messaging and communication. The recurrent question is addressed how to value `products' and `services', including the elementary economics of `data', `information' and `knowledge'. It is found that the so-called `semiotic ladder' provides a very suggestive reference for measuring a variety of value aspects.
