Abstract

The teacher’s task is to enable his or her students to develop their individually different processes of knowledge building and meaning construction as well as positive attitudes (De Corte, 2000). It is a common belief that mathematics is a difficult subject. Therefore, in order to help learners succeed it is of the utmost importance that the teacher should examine and analyse possible barriers that might have a negative impact on learning.
