Abstract

Hawksley’s chapter on “Proposing Peacebuilding through the Arts” reflects on the ways in which arts-based approaches to peacebuilding are proposed, arguing that the arts’ capacities for engaging witness, empathy, memory and vision should not be abstracted from their place in the moral imaginations of particular artists or communities. She roots her theoretical proposal in a detailed discussion of the work of South African artist William Kentridge, showing how his powerful and haunting engagement with political and peacebuilding themes emerges from a deep fidelity to both his context and his craft.
