It is shown that the generation of high-order modes of the nonparaxial nonlinear Schrödinger equation can be induced by a diffracted beam at circular apertures propagating in a self-focusing medium, and that, under perturbations, they may break up into hot spots. Comparison with classic experiments and those patterns due to modulation instability patterns is discussed. A whole analysis of the phenomena involved is done in detail. © 2009 Springer New York.
