Abstract

This chapter describes the rapid expansion of community-based treatment for sex offenders that has taken place over the last 10 yrs. Topics include: the first national survey of United Kingdom (UK) practice; the sex offender treatment and evaluation project (STEP) report (psychological measures, deviancy and risk, nature of treatment, effectiveness of treatment, program deficits, therapeutic environment, STEP recommendations, current practice in the UK); and current treatment approaches (research and evaluation, National Association for Development of Work with Sex Offenders, the Thames Valley Project-an illustrative treatment program, motivating the organizations, arguing the case to improve treatment services, program delivery, staffing and organizational support, program structure, core treatment program, relapse prevention, partner's group, long-term treatment group, maintenance group).
