Repetition is the time-mode central to Freud's theory of memory. The author substantiates this thesis with a detailed analysis concentrating on Freud's text »On Screen Memories«. It transpires that screen memory represents a universal model for all childhood memories to the extent that they are subject to the distortions of repression and the recurrence of repressed material. In his analysis, repetition and afterwardness are identified by the author as the two time-figures of psychoanalysis that suspend the traditional linear concept of time. In conclusion, Walter Benjamin's thoughts on the concept of history are drawn upon to sharpen our view of Freud's conception of memory.
