Abstract

Objective: characterize the occupational exposure involving biological material according to the records of work accident release of a Brazilian public hospital reference in infectious diseases. Method: retrospective descriptive study with a quantitative approach, involving 117 (100%) occupational exposures. Developed in the period from January of 2009 to December of 2014. It was performed descriptive statistical analysis and the proportions analyzed by Chi-square test (CI = 95%; p < 0.05). Results: 65.8% of exposures occurred among nursing technicians, percutaneously (59.8%); involving blood (58.1%); the material used was hollow needle (42.7%). In 53.8% of the identified source patients, the result was positive for HIV. Conclusion: the data found indicate that the cutting and perforating material was more prevalent in the exposures and that these involved women, young people and nursing professionals. It was also identified the need for improvements in the notification form and in measures for the prevention of accidents. (English) [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
