Abstract

This chapter gives a general overview on the carbon atom and its remarkable electronic properties that allow this element to form various allotropes. These different molecules show an outstanding diversity of macroscopic properties making carbon such a unique element. A quick introduction to band structure theory is also provided to the reader.
