Abstract

As the field of I.V. therapy increases in its role as a specialty, the I.V. nurse needs to constantly increase his/her knowledge level. In some areas of the country I.V. team nurses are expanding their role to include the drawing of arterial blood gases. Consequently a clear understanding of acid-base balance is imperative. Fluid and electrolytes, level of consciousness, and electrocardiographic changes are all influenced by acid-base balance. The arterial blood gas is a readily available means to assess the patient's oxygenation status and help in the interpretation of acid-base balance. © National Intravenous Therapy Association, Inc.
