The review, with 101 refs., covers the microbial ecol. of the Dead Sea, including physicochem. characteristics of the sea, hydrog. properties, salt concns. and ionic compn., phototrophic microbes, bacteria, protozoa, adaptation of the Dead Sea microorganisms to their environment, population dynamics of Dunaliella, community dynamic of halobacteria, bacteriorhodopsin, SO42- redn., and the fate of nonhalophilic bacteria.
