Providing surgical vascular access for a child who is acutely or chronically ill is very rewarding but can also be extremely challenging and sometimes frustrating. Since the trouble-free function of these lines is critically important for the children and their parents and because, like any mechanical device, they are prone to technical mishap, surgeons should approach the placement and maintenance of surgically placed lines with the utmost precision and attention to detail. Complications from central venous catheters are frequent, insidious, and potentially life threatening and should be anticipated and treated promptly and aggressively.
