Abstract

Avian reproduction shows specific features linked to oviparity and to a complex system of internal fertilization, which contributes to the reproductive strategy of flying animals. In this paper, we review the main characteristics of bird gamete biology and fertilization such as the system of sperm storage/selection in the female oviduct and the polyspermic fertilization. Their consequences on the development of reproductive biotechnologies and their role in the efficiency of poultry production are also presented.
