Abstract

Wear behaviors of Cu(45)Zr(48)Al(7) bulk metallic glass are investigated by ball-on-disk method at room temperature. The alloy exhibits different wear resistance under air, low vacuum (10(2) Pa) and pure nitrogen atmosphere. Oxidation occurs clearly during wearing under all the atmospheres studied here. However the oxidation degree decreases as the atmosphere transforms from air to low vacuum, then to pure N(2) gas. Meanwhile wear resistance also decreases correspondingly. It seems that oxides brought from wearing, such as ZrO(2) and Al(2)O(3), significantly enhanced the wear resistance of the Cu-based alloy.
