Abstract

Why do universities not give priority to education? The article suggests a formal answer on the basis of Lacan’s four discourses. Why education? Why do we learn? Is it caused by a natural curiosity or is it caused by anxiety? Is it at all possible to control the influence that we undoubtedly have on each other, not least when we teach? This will be discussed in the context of the psychoanalytical concept of transference as a condition for and an obstacle to teaching.
