Digital images, including whole slide images (WSI), offer a myriad of opportunities for education in pathology. Digital images can be readily shared, often with multiple users anywhere and at any time. Navigation of digitized slides is more interactive than static images, which simulates viewing of glass slides with a microscope (i.e., virtual microscopy). Image viewers allow users to edit, measure, annotate, and even analyze WSI. Wsi have accordingly started to replace the use of glass slides and traditional light microscopes for educational purposes. This chapter focuses on the applications of WSI in education including graduate education (e.g., medical school), training of pathology residents and allied healthcare workers (e.g., cytotechnologists), virtual tracking and tutoring, as well as opportunities for e-learning and virtual workshops.
