Abstract

Syringidium bicorne Ehrenb. [= resting spore of Cerataulina daemon (Grev.) Hasle] and S. simplex L.W. Bail, were examined with light and electron microscopy. The combination Cerataulina bicornis (syn. C. daemon) is suggested. The taxonomic affinity of S. simplex is unknown. The structure of the resting spore of C. bicornis confirms the taxonomic relationship of Cerataulina H. Perag. ex Schiitt with Hemiaulus Ehrenb. and Eucampia Ehrenb. Cerataulina bicornis was observed as resting spores in Miocene sediments as well as in Recent plankton and sediment samples. © 1985 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
