This paper focuses on how similarities (and differences) between ordinary liquids and polymeric fluids may be transposed to liquid crystalline phases of low molar mass mesogens and their polymeric analogues. This general theme is prefaced by a brief review of the two general classes of polymeric liquid crystals.
