A review with 92 refs. is given, examg. ice formation and evolution in clouds, impurities in tropospheric ice particles, cloud radiative properties and ice microphysics, and the relation between atm. ice and thunderstorm electrification. Accurate and complete characterization of atm. ice particle distributions and lifetimes is a pressing need. The evolution of ice particles in upper atm. conditions involves phys. and chem. processes in temp. and humidity regimes that have not been quant. explored in the lab.
