The information contained in the amplitude of the postsynaptic response about the relative timing of presynaptic spikes is considered using a model dynamic synapse. We show that the combination of particular forms of facilitation and depression greatly enhances information transfer at the synapse for high frequency stimuli. These dynamic mechanisms do not enhance the information if present individually. The synaptic model closely matches the behaviour of the auditory system synapse, the calyx of Held, for which accurate transmission of the timing of high frequency presynaptic spikes is essential. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
