Abstract

On December 12, 2015, the 196 members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted by consensus a new international climate agreement, the Paris Agreement. This treaty, which is the outcome of four years of intense negotiations, establishes a legal framework to organize the action of the international community against climate change after 2020. First multilateral agreement to be adopted on the greenhouse gas problem since the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement marks a new step in the history of the UN climate regime founded in 1992 with the adoption of the UNFCCC. It represents an important milestone in its evolution. This article presents the main features of the legal framework set forth by the Paris Agreement. It also seeks to highlight the major fallouts of this new treaty for the UN climate regime.
