Prognoses of the development of waste production, water consumption and waste water production, and loading of the atmosphere in West Germany make clear that radical measures of environmental protection are necessary. This article attempts to indicate the environmental task of industrial management. The task is defined as the protection of both the external and the internal environments of industry from damage. The ideas of protection, environment, and damage included in this definition are elucidated in detail and, on the basis of this elucidation, the aim and meaning of this task are described in general. Finally, it is discussed how this environmental task can be performed in a process of management consisting of the individual phases of planning, decision, execution and control.
