Abstract

Vital functions are monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU) to assess progress, identify impending organ failure and, as a consequence, to sustain organ function. The main systems monitored are the cardiac, pulmonary, renal and cerebral. Arterial and venous blood tests are performed regularly and the results are charted to demonstrate trends. Renal, pulmonary and cardiac organ support is readily delivered as necessary.
