Abstract

Linear elastic fracture mechanics as introduced in Chap. 2 is extended to account for plastic deformations at the crack tip. The concept of an equivalent elastic crack and an effective stress intensity factor for small-scale yielding is explicated. Size and shape of the plastic zone ahead of the crack tip are calculated and the effect of biaxial external loading is discussed. The crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) is introduced as an alternative intensity parameter.
