Abstract

The authors describe disability trends among the elderly nursing home residents in the US from 1973 to 1997. The nursing home population became more disabled over time due to the fact that severely disabled and demented persons became increasingly larger group in nursing homes. They also show that functionnaly independent elderly are less likely to be in nursing homes in the most recent period.
