Abstract

Garut is a regency that closely adjacent to the capital of the West Java Indonesia province, Bandung. This position makes Garut functioning as satellite and hinterland to some big cities near Jakarta, Indonesia's capital. Infrastructure projects in this area continuously grow to support the development and uprising of the economic index. On the other hand, Garut regency is prone to natural hazards, including earthquake shaking originating from the South Java subduction zone or local fault near the area. Consequently, seismic microzonation assessment to manage earthquake risk is necessary to perform at the expected earthquake-catastrophic-affected areas. In 2018 Puslitbang BMKG conducted a microzonation survey at 131 sites within the Garut area and obtained soil characteristics in value of the dominant period, dominant frequency, and ground shear strain. Based on the range value of the dominant period (T0), sub-district of Tarogong Kidul, Tarogong Kaler and Garut city is dominated by soft soil, and based on ground shear strain measurement showed some area have the potency to experience building cracks, building displacement and liquefaction if shaken by a significant earthquake. Those kinds of information would provide guidelines for city planning and in deciding the new suited structure.
