Abstract

Traditional manual indexing of the literature is so expensive that only a part of the total literature, the books, can be disclosed to the library search. The information retrieval system OMNIS supported by the fulltext database system Myriad provides the archiving, disclosing and searching functions at drasticaly reduced costs by utilizing the latest achievements of data technology. These techniques like scanning, OCR, multimedia document architecture, fulltext search, and client-server architecture allow also novel and comfortable services in worldwide network environment and demand nontraditional support by the underlying database system. The system implementation is independent of the particular document structure and so it can be used for information retrieval problems also outside of the library world. The discussion of the running applications and the experience resulting from the first year of operation close the paper.
